Bea, I was pretty solidly convinced that he had autism, but I didn't feel like saying that explicitly in the post, because A.) I'm not anybody's doctor, and B.) it didn't really matter to what the kid's label might be-- he was a nice kid with a cognitive difference whose mother was at the end of her day's ration of rope, and that was the important thing.

If I made you fall in love with him it's only because I fell in love. Which is because he was an awesome kid.

All my autism alarm bells were going off as I read this post. It's sad that the boy's mother couldn't receive the sympathy you were so graciously offering to her and her son. Part of it, I think, is that for everyone like you there are three or four others who will judge the boy - and his mother - for the behaviour you described. And then there's the boy himself. He is wonderful (so wonderful!) just as he is - but his mother has the responsibility to protect him from the negative consequences of his "inappropriate" behaviour. I notice, always, how very endearing Bub's autistic tendencies are - and then I remember that to his peers, endearing means nothing. He needs rules to follow that will enable him to navigate those social waters with minimum damage. And it's a daunting task.

I'm amazed at how you can make me love that boy, the one that you only met for about five minutes.
