Chopped Liver

Today was my second half-day working in the office, and Isaac's first day alone with our new babysitter.*

I was worried that he would cry when I left this morning.

He didn't.

He did cry when the babysitter left this afternoon, though.

*John happened to have the day off of work the first day I went into the office, so Isaac stayed home with his dad that day.

Ah. For my international readers: it's from a regional saying (I think Jewish in origin). When someone chooses to spend time with someone else instead of you, or gives a gift to someone else instead of you, you might jokingly say, "What am I, chopped liver?" Because presumably, given the opportunity to choose between eating chopped liver and eating something else, one would tend to pick whatever was not chopped liver.

(I have also heard from people who actually LIKE chopped liver that the phrase came about because chopped liver is always served as a side dish and never as the main course. You may have to ask a Jewish person for the straight dope on this one).

You and me both, hon. Bub cries EVERY TIME he has to leave his babysitter's house, and when I arrived to pick him up today he looked up and said urgently, "Bye-bye, mama!"

Good luck with your new gig, Jaelithe. I can't believe how much your juggling right now! I'm certain he thinks of you much more highly than chopped liver... Cheese at least. ;-)

Don't feel bad, mama. The boys do that with our neighbor girl every time, though I think it's because she bribes them with candy.
